Ranchi, April 22: The Amity School of Communication at Amity University on Friday celebrated ‘International Earth Day’ and organized an essay and slogan writing and poster making competition to make students aware of the importance of preservation of Earth.
The university had earlier invited entries from students all over the country, as a result of which the competition was held between entries from several universities including those in Ranchi and even one in Bangalore.
Guest speakers on the session were Dr. Nitish Priyasarshi, environmentalist cum Associate Professor Department of Geology, Ranchi University; Bindu Bhushan Dubey and Nand Kishore Murlidhar, environmental journalist, Khabar Mantra, Ranchi.
B B Dubey on the occasion spoke of the relevance of air, water and fire. He further emphasized on the utility of planting Peepal trees.
Dr Nitish shared his Covid experience of being admitted in the hospital for 28 days on the occasion. “I visit a forest every week,”‘ he further said. He further discussed the National Education Policy draft where he said it should be made necessary for school goers to go on a jungle walk. He focused on Palamu, where plants are seen to have fluorosis.
N K Murlidhar talked of Amitabh Bacchan’s first movie wherein he played a contractor of Ranchi Forests and in another as a Range Officer. Talking of the importance of trees, he shared anecdotes of his life that were specifically related to his love for trees.
Dr. Raman Kr Jha, Vice Chancellor, Amity University Jharkhand welcomed the guests to the session. He said students are the ambassadors of all thought processes. “Cry of mother earth is not heard by us. Don’t wait for the perfect time to implement change,” he said. Further talking of the importance of environment conservation and the need to do one’s bit, he pledged that the Amity University would not use plastic bottles in any events to be organised. He further requested the registrar to make a proposal for the university to collect Rs 10 per month from students and teachers and for the university to plant a tree per day.
Dr Ajit Kumar Pandey, Director, Amity University Jharkhand expressed his belief saying, “We are dependent on Earth for everything but are creating concrete jungles to live in.”
At the end of the event, names of winners were announced that included winners of poster making, slogan writing and essay writing in Hindi and English. Winners of the competition include Anushka (St.Xavier College) who bagged the first prize followed by Shoptik (BJMC, Amity) and Mahima (BJMC, Amity) in poster making. Winners of slogan writing competition include P Sugandhini Reddy (Sankranti Women’s College, Hyderabad) who came first, followed by Nancy Baraik (BJMC, Amity) and Swati Kumari (BJMC, Amity). Later, names of winners of essay writing in English were announced that included Avantika (St. Xavier College Ranchi) as the winner, while Anshika Pandey (BJMC, Amity) and Debashree Narayan (BA English, Amity) were second and third respectively. Meanwhile, Richa Kumari (BJMC, Amity) was chosen the winner for the Hindi Essay competition.
