Jamshedpur, Nov 11: Unidentified criminals launched an armed attack on a local goon at a crowded street in an urban slum under Adityapur thana area of the adjoining Seraikela-Kharsawan district, about four kms away from here on Thursday morning.
The attackers lobbed three country-made bombs and fired two rounds of shots targeting the goon identified as Vicky Nandi who escaped with a minor splinter injury.
But as a fall out of such an attack at a crowded street filled with Chhat devotees, a 20-year-old girl was seriously injured.
The girl identified as Kirti Kumari has sustained splinter injuries and has been admitted to the Tata Main Hospital.
The incident took place at the densely-populated Bhatia Bustee situated along the Kharkai river around 7 am while a large number of Chhath devotees were returning home on foot and also by vehicles from the river ghats after offering Arghya to the rising sun.
A police party that reached the spot immediately has recovered an empty cartridge from the scene of the armed attack.
OC, Adityapur thana, Alok Kumar Dubey confirmed the firing at Bhatia Bustee and also about a girl being injured in the incident, but could not say anything about the attackers.
“The girl who sustained injury is a resident of Bhatia Bustee itself and fell victim to the splinter injuries. We are yet to find out the attackers, ” said Dubey.
The OC said the attacker must have taken advantage of the overcrowded road for launching the armed attack and must have fled the scene taking benefit of the crowd.
Dubey said they are trying to detect the attackers by interrogating Vicky and others.
Vicky Nandi (26) was earlier indulged in criminal activities, but now he carries out the business of supplying building materials in Adityapur.
