Guhawati, May 22: A special investigation team (SIT) was formed by Assam government on Sunday to probe the mob attack on a police station in Nagaon district on Saturday following alleged death of a person in police custody.

A separate investigation has been launched to determine the circumstances surrounding the murder of Safiqul Islam, a seafood seller from the Salanibari district of Batadrava police station. On Sunday, a demolition campaign against unauthorised settlements was carried out in the area.

“A mob of nearly 200-250 persons burnt the old building of Batadrava police station, which had some records, and few motor cycles. We have registered a case and arrested five persons and detained 15 others for questioning. A SIT has been formed to probe the incident. It will complete investigations within 45 days and file charge sheet within 60 days,” said Special DGP (law and order) GP Singh.

He stated that another impartial investigation on the death of person, whose death sparked the mob rage, will be conducted. Islam is said to have been apprehended by police on Friday and died the next day in unexplained circumstances.

He was apprehended after being discovered inebriated, according to police. They claim that Islam passed out when his family members came to see him at the police station and fed him something to eat. He was rushed to the hospital and confirmed ‘brought dead.’
