Aizawl, May 3: In an effort to stop the influx of unauthorised immigrants from the neighbouring country, Assam Rifles will increase monitoring along the 510 km section of the India-Myanmar border in Mizoram, officials said.

As Myanmarese citizens began seeking refuge in the northeastern state following a military coup in their neighbouring nation, they also expressed concern over the “rising number of crime incidents, including murder cases”.

“We will cease most of the crossings along the Indo-Myanmar border to prevent illegal influx which is hampering the law and order situation in Mizoram,” an Assam Rifles official said on Tuesday.

According to him, Myanmar nationals recently killed three Mizoram citizens in the Myanmar side next to the Siaha district in south Mizoram and one in Serchhip.

Additionally, he claimed that a number of groups in the Chin state of Myanmar have been “indulging in drug trafficking” to India.

“Many refugees or illegal immigrants from both Bangladesh and Myanmar have acquired fake Indian identity cards,” he said.

Bangladesh and Mizoram have a 318-kilometre shared border, which is patrolled by the Border Security Force (BSF).

After the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Ministry of Home Affairs and the state government, the Assam Rifles, the main paramilitary force, will move its battalion headquarters from the centre of Aizawl to Zokhawsang in a phased manner, according to another official.

The distance from the state capital to Zokhawsang is 15 kilometres.

The MoU is being prepared, and as of right now there is no time frame for the relocation, he said.
