Calcutta, March 23: The Calcutta High Court has registered a suo moto case in the incident of Rampurhat, Birbhum district on Wednesday.
Nearly a dozen houses were set ablaze in a village in West Bengal’s Birbhum district early Tuesday, killing eight people, including three women and two children, in a suspected retaliation for the murder of a ruling TMC panchayat officer.
The matter will be heard by the Chief Justice bench today at 2 p.m..
Eight people were buried late Tuesday night in the presence of district officials. Mina Bibi, Noornihar Bibi, Rupali Bibi, Bani Sheikh, Mihir Sheikh, and Neklal Sheik were among the adults who died, according to sources. So far, 11 persons have been arrested, and the West Bengal government has formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the incident, which will be led by Additional Director General (CID) Gyanwant Singh, according to state police chief Manoj Malviya.
