New Delhi, July 13: Justices Ujjal Bhuyan and SV Bhatti have been appointed as Supreme Court judges, according to a government notification.

The President is pleased to appoint Justices Ujjal Bhuyan and SV Bhatti Chief as Judges of the Supreme Court of India in accordance with the authority granted by the Indian Constitution, according to the announcement released on Wednesday. The appointment was made following consultation with the Chief Justice of India.

Justice Ujjal Bhuyan, the Chief Justice of the Telangana High Court and Justice S Venkatanarayana Bhatti, the Chief Justice of the Kerala High Court, were both nominated for appointment as justices of the Supreme Court by the Supreme Court Collegium last week.

In its resolution, the Collegium decided to propose Justice Ujjal Bhuyan and Justice S Venkatanarayana Bhatti’s appointments in the order of seniority.

The choice was made on July 5, 2023, after a collegium meeting that included Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul, Sanjiv Khanna, B R Gavai and Surya Kant.

The resolution stated that the Collegium found the two individuals to be deserving and suitable in all respects for being appointed as Judges of the Supreme Court of India after carefully evaluating the merit, integrity and competence of eligible Chief Justices and senior puisne Judges of the High Courts and also accommodating a plurality of considerations.

The Gauhati High Court appointed Justice Ujjal Bhuyan as a judge on October 17, 2011. He has been Chief Justice of the High Court for the State of Telangana since June 28, 2022, and he is the senior-most judge of his parent High Court.

The senior-most judge in his parent High Court, Justice S Venkatanarayana Bhatti was appointed to the High Court of Andhra Pradesh on April 12, 2013. He was serving as the Chief Justice of the Kerala High Court at present.

The Supreme Court now has thirty-one judges on the bench, despite having a sanctioned strength of thirty-four. Currently, the Supreme Court has three vacancies.
