Daltonganj, Feb 4: The atmosphere of community policing in Jharkhand’s Gumla district on Thursday was a bit different than usual. Gumla SP Ehtesham Waquarib, an IPS officer, acted more as a doctor than the chief of the Gumla police in the Marwa village.
Waquarib holds an MBBS degree with specialisation in ‘Community Medicine.’
Lagatar24.com today spoke to him to know what he did at Marwa on Thursday.
The IPS cum MBBS degree holder Waquarib said, “The most dangerous Maoist Budheshwar Oraon’s writ used to run here in Marwa. He was the epitome of horror. He was carrying a reward of Rs.15 lakh on his head.”
The locals knew then Budheshwar would skin them off if he found any of them having any proximity to the police. Budheshwar was killed in action by police last year. His death was the herald of peace at Marwa.
Waquarib said, “When we held the community policing exercise on Thursday in Marwa, it was like ‘breathing in open’ for the villagers.”
He examined the patients by wearing a police uniform. It was to tell the poor and law-abiding people that police are a friend in distress.
The SP and 218 battalion CRPF doctor Madhusudan reached Marwa with lots of medicines. A huge gathering of 200 men, women and children were there. The SP said most of the women patients that he examined had lower back pain. They were given medicines for free.
A child was found having glands in his neck. A few had cataracts. Anemia was visible among the growing girls.
“We had brought medicines of our own besides the CRPF which too had pooled in the medicines. A nearby government health hub too helped in the exercise with medicines.
Sources said this MBBS doctor cum police officer has doubled up as physician on numerous occasions.
The SP said he loves treating patients and always asks people to pay attention to their personal hygiene.
Apart from the medical camp, he and his team distributed 50 radio sets and a similar number of solar lights besides sheaves of the blankets.
