Dhanbad, Nov 17: The Dhanbad CBI Special Court today awarded five years of rigorous imprisonment and a penalty of Rs 33 lakh to the Directorate General of Mines Safety (DGMS) surveyor Subir Kumar Palit for amassing assets disproportionate to known sources of income.
Special SBI Judge Rajkumar Mishra while delivering the ruling in the 14-year-old case today in his order said that corruption has taken the form of cancer in society. He said getting involved in corrupt activities while working in a government servant post is a major crime. “So no liberal approach could be adopted with accused in this case,” the judge said.
DGMS Dhanbad is the national headquarter it is the first time when an officer has been fined Rs 33 lakh as well as a jail term for corruption.
CBI special public prosecutor Chandan Kumar Singh told the media persons that during the trial, 22 witnesses had been examined.
The Anti-Corruption wing of CBI had filed a charge sheet against Subir Kumar Palit in court that in three years (April 1, 2005, to October 31, 2008) of posting at DGMS headquarters in Dhanbad, he amassed property worth Rs 32.89 lakh from unknown sources. Besides this, he also got a flat, car and other properties from unknown sources.
