Ranchi, April 23: The Department of English Language and Literature (ELL) of Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee University organised a seminar under the ‘Popular Lecture Series’ at its premises, wherein the guest speaker Delhi University law intern Ranjan Kumar discussed several sections of the IPC and explained them to the students.
Talking of several such sections, Kumar said, “The real power of women lies in the knowledge of the law, and how one can use it to protect them against injustice.”
He further continued saying, “Nowadays there is a mobile phone in every hand and a camera in every mobile. Anyone can take a photo of anyone anywhere, but do you know that taking a photo of a girl or a woman without her permission is a serious crime.”
“Section 353 (C) of the IPC has ensured that if someone has captured the photograph of a woman without informing her and is constantly staring at her, a woman may file a complaint and if found guilty, the person may be sentenced for three to seven years,” Kumar explained.
While talking about other sections of the IPC meant to protect women, Kumar said, “Under section 354 (B), if someone follows a woman against her will, then on conviction, the guilty can be punished with imprisonment of about 5 years. There are many such sections in the Indian Penal Code that give protection to women.”
Ranjan Kumar further informed the students about the powers that can be achieved with the knowledge of law. He also made them aware of the importance of the most important pillar, the judiciary. He said that the laws of that country are constantly trying to empower women in India and all over the world.
“Under Section 354 of the IPC, if someone passes a lewd comment on a woman passing by the road, then it is a case of eve teasing and the guilty can be punished with a minimum of 3 years. At the same time, under IPC section 354 (B), if an attempt is made to undress a woman without consent, then the culprit can be sentenced up to 7 years if convicted,” Kumar later added.
Along with all this information, Kumar introduced the present students to the terminology related to law and the legal language of everyday life.
