Dumka: Three days after 40 inmates of the tribal welfare boys’ hostel were allegedly assaulted by their seniors on the pretext of ragging, an FIR was lodged against 27 named accused with the town police station on Saturday.

The junior students, who are inmates of the tribal welfare hostel number five situated in the SP College premises, had submitted their joint complaint to the town police station last evening narrating their tale of miseries they had to undergo on the night of June 22.

“It was as if we experienced a South Indian movie as our seniors started assaulting us with canes and other items indiscriminately after switching off the lights,” rued a student before the media, adding that they were all stripped before being beaten up black and blue. The victim students showed the marks of swelling all around their bodies.

The assaulters summoned juniors in separate groups of five students and continued torturing them overnight. They stated that they were targeted for failing to oblige the seniors by organising a feast and inviting them to relish chicken curry and rice.

According to the victims, most of the seniors had already graduated from the college and were unauthorised occupants of the hostel rooms.

“Investigation into the allegations of ragging and assault levelled by a group of hostel inmates against their seniors is going on,” DIG Sudarshan Mandal said. He along with SP Ambar Lakda visited the hostel on Saturday to take stock of the situation.
