New Delhi: The Delhi Police have initiated legal action against a social media user who made lewd and derogatory comments about Smriti Singh, the widow of late Captain Anshuman Singh, a Kirti Chakra awardee (posthumous). Acting on a complaint filed by the National Commission for Women (NCW), an FIR has been registered under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Information Technology (IT) Act.

The FIR, lodged by the force’s Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operation (IFSO) unit, cites violations under Section 79 of the BNS and Section 67 of the IT Act against the Delhi resident. The NCW had taken suo motu cognisance of the matter and promptly approached the Delhi Police Commissioner, urging swift action and demanding the individual’s arrest.

In its statement condemning the incident, the NCW highlighted the offensive nature of the remarks made on social media, stressing the legal provisions violated by such behavior. The commission underscored the urgency of addressing such cases to uphold dignity and respect for women in society.

The investigation into the matter is currently ongoing to ascertain further details and take appropriate legal actions against the accused individual.

Captain Anshuman Singh, a doctor serving in the Indian Army, tragically lost his life in a fire incident at an ammunition dump in July last year. He was posthumously awarded the Kirti Chakra for his exemplary bravery in saving lives during the incident. His widow, Smriti Singh, along with his mother, received the prestigious award from President Draupadi Murmu at a ceremony in Rashtrapati Bhavan.
