New Delhi: Former BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh has been acquitted in the sexual harassment case filed by women wrestlers, with Delhi’s Rouse Avenue Court delivering the verdict on Monday, citing insufficient evidence.

Brij Bhushan, Co-Accused Vinod Tomar Both Acquitted

Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, former president of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), had been out on regular bail since July 20, 2023. Alongside him, co-accused Vinod Tomar was also acquitted in the case. The verdict was delivered by Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (ACJM) Ashwini Panwar of Delhi’s Rouse Avenue Court.

Case Background: Allegations by Six Women Wrestlers

The case originated when six women wrestlers accused Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh of sexual harassment, a matter that had sparked nationwide discussion and triggered widespread protests, with opposition parties launching sharp attacks against the BJP over the allegations at the time.

FIR, Chargesheet and Charges Framed Against Brij Bhushan

Based on the wrestlers’ complaint, Delhi Police had registered an FIR against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh and filed a chargesheet against him on June 15, 2023. He was charged under Sections 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 354A (sexual harassment), 354D (stalking) and 506(1) (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The trial court had framed charges against him on May 10, 2024, stating at the time that the evidence on record was sufficient to frame charges under Sections 354 and 354A of the IPC.
