New Delhi, April 13: The Municipal Corporation, the Delhi Government, and other respondents were ordered by the Delhi High Court on Wednesday to file a status report and action taken report on the two recent Ghazipur landfill fires.

The bench of Justices Vipin Sanghi and Navin Chawla sought statements from all parties involved in the case and set a hearing date for May 4, 2022.

The Delhi government has also launched an investigation into the fire. This type of occurrence has occurred before, according to Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai. However, the Delhi Pollution Control Committee has been ordered to provide a full report on the recent incident, which occurred on March 28, 2022.

Sections 278 (creating atmosphere toxic to health), 285 (negligent conduct with respect to fire or combustible stuff), and 336 (act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the Indian Penal Code were also used to file a First Information Report against unknown people.

Notably, a fire broke out at Ghazipur dump on April 10 night for the second time. In the last two weeks, the site has been the scene of a second such occurrence. Earlier, a fire broke out on March 28 at a dumping yard in East Delhi’s Ghazipur landfill.

The mountain of waste at the Ghazipur dump, according to Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, is the product of civic bodies’ inefficiency and corruption.
