Gurugram: The luxury of Gurugram’s most prestigious residential area, The Camellias by DLF on Golf Course Road, was overshadowed by severe waterlogging after heavy overnight rainfall on Monday. The area, known for apartments priced upwards of Rs 100 crore, was submerged in waist-deep water, leading to widespread criticism and viral content on social media.

The Camellias, a symbol of luxury with apartments that initially sold for Rs 18 crore in 2014 and have since appreciated to over Rs 40 crore, is situated in one of India’s most exclusive neighborhoods. However, the heavy rains exposed the infrastructural flaws in the area, as visuals of the flooded streets resembled those from less expensive areas of the National Capital Region (NCR), where real estate prices are significantly lower.

According to the district administration, Gurugram recorded 53 mm of rainfall by 8:30 am, with some parts of the city receiving over 80 mm. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) also forecasted light to moderate rain with thundershowers in the NCR, compounding the issue further.

The flooding led to widespread criticism of the local civic authorities, with social media users sarcastically renaming the city “Jalgram” in response to the visuals of people wading through the waterlogged streets and homes. Many accused the authorities of failing to provide basic drainage infrastructure despite the area’s high property values, while others pointed to corruption in construction projects as a root cause.

One social media user even suggested punitive measures against responsible officials, proposing the withholding of their pensions and salaries and recovering the losses from their personal assets.

As the situation continues to unfold, the viral images and videos have sparked a debate on the disparity between the cost of living in such luxurious areas and the quality of civic infrastructure provided.
