Ludhiana, Feb 11: In illegal sand mining case, Punjab chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi’s nephew, Bhupinder Singh alias Honey, was sentenced to 14 days in judicial custody on Friday.
Honey was arrested on February 3 in Jalandhar by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) as part of a money laundering investigation into alleged sand mining operations in the poll-bound state.
Honey is Channi’s sister-in-son, law’s and he has been in the ED’s custody since that time.
Honey confirmed to the ED that the money confiscated from his possession was generated through unlawful sand mining, transfers, and postings, according to the ED.
On January 18, the federal authorities launched raids against Honey and others, seizing approximately 7.9 crore rupees from his facilities and another approximately 2 crore rupees from a linked person named as Sandeep Kumar.
Prior to the Assembly election in the border state, the ruling Congress has accused the BJP-led central government of exploiting federal agencies.
Channi was recently nominated by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi as the party’s chief ministerial candidate for the next election.
Punjab will elect a new administration in February, and the results will be announced on March 10 alongside those of four other states: Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Goa, and Manipur.
