New Delhi, Dec 9: In response to the protests that have rocked the regime since September, Iran carried out its first known execution on Thursday, drawing international outrage and warnings from human rights organizations that more hangings are about to occur.
After a court procedure that rights organisations criticised as a sham trial, Mohsen Shekari (23) was found guilty and given the death penalty for blocking a street and injuring a paramilitary during the early stage of the protests in mid-September.
Human rights organisations warned that at least a dozen additional persons are currently in danger of an impending execution after receiving hanging sentences in connection with the recent protests.
Iranian Kurdish woman Mahsa Amini (22) died after being detained by morality police in Tehran for allegedly breaking the nation’s strict hijab dress rule, which has sparked protests across the country for nearly three months.
The Islamic republic is facing its greatest challenge since it was created in the wake of the shah’s overthrow in 1979 as a result of the protests, which the authorities have dubbed ‘riots.’
“Mohsen Shekari, a rioter who blocked Sattar Khan Street in Tehran on September 25 and wounded one of the security guards with a machete, was executed this morning,” the judiciary’s Mizan Online website said.
