New Delhi, Jan 21:  Passengers arriving in India from at-risk nations who test positive will be handled according to protocol and will not necessarily be confined to an isolation facility, according to a health ministry directive released on Thursday. The updated policy for overseas arrivals, issued by the Union health minister, will take effect on January 22. The rest of the rules and standards are virtually unchanged.

“if such travellers are tested positive (on arrival), their samples should be further sent for genomic testing at INSACOG laboratory network. They shall be treated/isolated as per laid down standard protocol,” reads the notification.

The current rules (valid till Jan 21) required people testing positive on arrival from at-risk countries to be “managed at isolation facility and treated as per protocol”.

Passengers who show signs of illness during screening will be “immediately segregated and transported to a medical facility in accordance with health protocol.” Their contacts will be identified and managed according to protocol if they test positive. Requirements such as a seven-day home quarantine, an eighth-day test, and seven-day self-health monitoring will continue.
