Ranchi, Aug.24: The Jharkhand High Court today directed state police director general (DGP) and Ranchi senior superintendent of police (SSP) to file an affidavit informing about the latest developments in the case of former Supreme Court judge late M Y Eqbal’s land grab attempt in the heart of Jharkhand capital.

A division bench headed by Justice S Chandrashekhar before giving the direction, verbally asked the police officers why crime is not coming under control and what steps they had taken to control the crime in the State.

The court had taken suo-moto cognizance of media reports depicting how land mafias in presence of police officials were trying to grab the judge’s land.

On August 22, an absconding accused in the case Shahnawaz Ali alias Kanja Gaddi, surrendered before the court of judicial magistrate Kamlesh Behra. Gaddi turned up before the court after Lower Bazar police station officials knocked the court door for an order to attach his property. He surrendered before the court could pass an order. The other accused in this case are already in jail.

Havaldar Zainul Ansari, who was deputed for the maintenance of the law and order in Lower Bazar police station, had registered an FIR in this matter. It has been said in the FIR that Junaid Raj Pappu brought 20-25 unknown people and labourers with him and started breaking the wall built on the land of the late judge. These people broke the wall from the front.
