Ranchi: Jharkhand has taken a major step forward in combating the serious health challenge of sickle cell disease and has now become a model state in this effort, said State Health Minister Dr. Irfan Ansari. He was speaking at the state-level event organized at Ranchi Sadar Hospital on the occasion of World Sickle Cell Day.

Over 25 Lakh Screened, Only 1% Affected

Dr. Ansari informed that 25.94 lakh people have been screened across the state so far, with only 2,099 individuals found to be affected by sickle cell disease—less than 1% of the total. He credited this achievement to the dedication of doctors, nurses, ANMs, and Sahiyas, calling them the “real heroes” of the campaign.

Tablets and Salary Hike for Sahiyas

The minister announced that all Sahiyas will be provided tablets to help them work more efficiently. He also assured that plans are underway to increase their salaries, acknowledging their crucial role in healthcare delivery.

Bone Marrow Unit and Medico City in Ranchi

Dr. Ansari revealed that a bone marrow transplant unit will soon be established at Ranchi Sadar Hospital to treat sickle cell and other critical diseases locally. He also announced plans to develop a world-class “Medico City” in Jharkhand so that patients won’t need to travel outside the state for treatment.

Nationwide Goal to Eradicate Sickle Cell by 2047

Additional Chief Secretary (Health) Ajay Kumar Singh stated that India aims to eliminate sickle cell disease by 2047, with Jharkhand playing a key role. NHM Campaign Director Abu Imran noted that out of the 40 lakh screening target, over 25 lakh tests have already been completed in the state.

Strong Participation by Medical Community

The event saw participation from Civil Surgeon Dr. Prabhat Kumar, Dr. John F. Kennedy, Dr. Kamlesh, Dr. Pankaj, Dr. Vimlesh Singh, Anima Kisku, Praveen Singh, and a large number of doctors, Sahiyas, and health workers.
