Joshimath crisis: Uttarakhand waives off electric, water bills of affected locals

Chamoli, Feb 12: The Uttarakhand Government on Sunday waived off the electricity and water bills for local residents affected by land subsidence in Joshimath at the orders issued on the instructions of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami.

In the cabinet meeting convened regarding the Joshimath disaster, it was decided that the bills of the affected people would be waived for the next six months from November 2022. The orders in this regard were issued on Sunday.

On Friday, Chamoli District Magistrate (DM) Himanshu Khurana said that multiple cracks have been noticed in 868 buildings of Joshimath.

Taking to Twitter, DM Himanshu said, “Cracks have been observed in 868 buildings in Joshimath. Out of these, 181 buildings are in vulnerable areas. The demolition of Hotel Mount View and Malari Inn is in the final stages.”

Himanshu Khurana also said that 878 members of 243 disaster-affected families are in relief camps and basic facilities are being provided to them.

“A total of 878 members of 243 disaster-affected families are in relief camps. Basic facilities like food, drinking water, and medicine are being made available to the affected people in the relief camps,” tweeted DM Khurana.

“Relief amount of 515.80 lakhs has been distributed to the families hit by subsidence in Joshimath. The amount distributed is advanced relief for damaged buildings, special rehabilitation package, a one-time special grant for transportation of goods, and for the purpose of immediate needs and purchase of household items,” he added.

Joshimath, a hill town in Uttarakhand, has experienced disruption as locals have taken to the streets to call for action over the cracks that have appeared in their homes. In 2021, residences in the holy village of Chamoli, which is 6,000 feet above sea level and hidden in the tranquil hills, began sustaining cracks and damage, which alarmed and alarmed the locals. Around 600 homes and other buildings in Joshimath have developed fractures as a result of the soil moving, and residents are camped out in the cold.
