New Delhi: Delhi’s Rouse Avenue Court has extended the judicial custody of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal until July 12 in the money laundering case associated with the now-scrapped Delhi liquor excise policy for 2021-22. This decision came on Wednesday, following a request from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which had arrested Kejriwal on June 26.
Additionally, the court has reserved its decision on Kejriwal’s application seeking permission for his wife’s presence during medical consultations with a special board constituted by AIIMS, as ordered by the court on April 22. The verdict on this application is expected on July 6.
On Saturday, Kejriwal was remanded to judicial custody until July 12 by the city court based on the CBI’s plea. Earlier that day, he had approached the Delhi High Court concerning the CBI’s case against him.
Kejriwal’s counsel, Rajat Bharadwaj, mentioned the bail plea before a bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela. Bharadwaj argued that Kejriwal was taken into illegal custody without adhering to Section 41 of the CrPC and urged the court to list the bail application promptly. In response, Acting Chief Justice Manmohan agreed to list the matter for Friday, stating, “We’ll list it day after.”
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convener remains in judicial custody at Tihar Jail in connection with a separate money laundering case filed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). Kejriwal was initially arrested by the ED on March 21 and was granted bail by the trial court on June 20. However, the High Court later stayed the trial court’s order.
The legal proceedings continue to unfold as the courts navigate the complexities surrounding Kejriwal’s arrest and the allegations tied to the Delhi liquor excise policy.
