New Delhi, Nov 9: After serving as a Supreme Court judge for more than six years, Justice DY Chandrachud took the oath of office on Wednesday to become the 50th Chief Justice of India (CJI). He will serve on the Supreme Court for two years.
Former Chief Justice YV Chandrachud was his father. The only father-son team in the history of the nation’s judiciary to hold the position of Chief Justice of India is Justice Chandrachud and his father.
Over the years, Justice Chandrachud has been referred to as a judge who always speaks his opinion by some and as “the liberals’ favourite and a progressive jurist” by others. He will be in charge of the Supreme Court’s operations during significant events in the future.
The nation now has its 50th Chief Justice of India, a man with the bravery of his convictions and a fierce dedication to the supremacy of citizens’ fundamental rights, a quality that has been evident in his rulings.
Through his rulings, Justice Chandrachud has made observations on important issues such as fundamental rights, privacy, gender sensitization, and the rights of women and LGBTQ+ people, among others. He has done so with a number of dissenting opinions, well-written judgments, and inspiring and sympathetic observations.
