Kannur, Feb 2: A pregnant woman and her husband were charred to death after their car caught fire near the Kannur district in Kerala on Thursday.

The deceased were identified as Kuttiattoor native Prajith (32) and his wife Reesha (26).

As per information, four people sitting in the back seat, including a three-year-old child survived the fire, which is suspected to have been caused by a short circuit. However, the police said that the cause can be ascertained only after a forensic test is held. The eyewitnesses said the couple could not get out after their seat belts got entangled.

“We tried our best to save them, but the vehicle turned into a fireball and we also feared the fuel tank burst due to the flames,” said one of the eyewitnesses.

Relatives said Reesha was in the advanced stage of her pregnancy and they were on their way to the Kannur district hospital after she developed pain.

The six-member family was heading to the hospital when the tragedy struck. After smoke came out of the car, Prajith stopped the car and opened the rear doors. He asked the relatives to vacate the car. However, the couple were unable to open the front doors and unlock their seat belts.

Meanwhile, Commissioner Ajith Kumar said, “Even though a short circuit is suspected as the cause of the fire, a detailed analysis must be conducted for the exact findings. Our team is working on it. Visual shows how the first eyewitness who saw the car engulfed in fire reacted when they saw the couple seated in the front seat. As per locals, the rescue team could not pull out the couple as the door couldn’t be opened whereas all the four sitting in the back seat were rescued.”
