Dhanbad, Dec 4: At least 20 passengers, including women and children were injured when a Kolkata-bound Nawada district (Bihar) bus turned turtle on the inter-state GT road under Rajganj police station of Dhanbad district in the wee hours of Saturday, said a police official.
All injured persons were admitted to Shahid Nirmal Mahto Medical College Hospital (SNMMCH) Dhanbad. The doctors in emergency said that the condition of 6-7 passengers was critical. The final decision of referring them will be taken on the basis of their internal tests reports.
Rajganj police station officer-in-charge Santosh Kumar informed that the incident occurred around 3 a.m. The bus ‘Sonu- Monu’ was going from Nawada district of Bihar to Kolkata when it turned upside down near roadside Dhaba Yuvraj Hotel.
“Police reached the spot after receiving the information and sent the injured passengers to SNMMCH Dhanbad. Six ambulances were engaged in carrying them to the hospital which was 20 km away,” said the OC who along with his team acted swiftly to rescue stranded passengers from the bus.
The passengers alleged that the bus driver lost control of the high-speed bus which led to the accident.
“There was a massive jam in Sherghati (Gaya district). The driver drank alcohol there. Before the accident, the bus had stopped at a hotel in Topchanchi (Dhanbad district) and the driver drank alcohol again. To make up for the lost timing, he ran the vehicle at high speed which caused the incident,” said a passenger, who was travelling with his family.
Allegedly, GT Road in Dhanbad has turned into a death trap for vehicles. Last week, five members of a family going from Ramgarh district (Jharkhand) to Asansol of West Bengal by car, died in an accident at GT Road under Govindpur police station of Dhanbad.
