New Delhi, March 30: The Supreme Court on Wednesday questioned the Uttar Pradesh government for not cancelling bail of the prime accused Ashish Misra in the Lakhimpur Kheri violence case, as per the recommendation of the special investigation team.
“It appears from the report of the monitoring judge that he had recommended the cancellation of bail and recommended that an application be filed for this. Why was this not done,” Chief Justice of India NV Ramana asked the lawyer appearing for the Uttar Pradesh government.
Meanwhile, the SIT wrote to the chief secretary (Home), recommending that the bail be cancelled. The monitoring judge also said this in his letter, said the CJI.
Notably, Ashish Mishra is the main suspect in the Lakhimpur Kheri violence case. October 3, violence occurred in Uttar Pradesh’s Lakhimpur Kheri, killing eight people, including four farmers. The incident occurred during a farmers’ demonstration before of Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya’s visit to Lakhimpur. A car driven by Ashish Mishra allegedly ploughed over the protesting farmers, killing four of them. Four more persons were killed in the ensuing fighting.
On February 10, the Allahabad High Court’s Lucknow bench had granted him bail.
