Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is set to lead a rally on August 17, demanding swift action and accountability in the ongoing investigation into the brutal rape and murder of a young woman in Kolkata. Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Derek O’Brien announced the march, emphasizing the need for the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to expedite its probe.
Derek O’Brien, in a statement on his official X handle, condemned the horrific crime, calling it one of the most “bestial and heinous” acts. He stressed that the public outrage demands a rapid and transparent investigation.
Explaining the motives behind the Chief Minister’s rally, O’Brien urged the CBI to provide daily updates on the investigation and adhere to the deadline initially set by Mamata Banerjee for the Kolkata Police to conclude the probe by Saturday. He emphasized that while one arrest has been made, true justice will only be achieved when all culprits are apprehended and the case is moved to a fast-track court.
O’Brien also cautioned that the CBI’s involvement should not result in the case being quietly sidelined. He underscored the urgency for swift justice and the harshest punishment for those responsible for this barbaric crime.
In addition to the main case, the TMC leader highlighted the arrest of 19 individuals by Kolkata Police in connection with the vandalism at the hospital during the nationwide ‘Reclaim the Night’ protest. He stressed that those responsible for the attack and destruction of property must also face legal consequences.
The rally led by Mamata Banerjee aims to amplify the demand for justice and ensure that the investigation remains a priority until all perpetrators are brought to justice.
