Mumbai: Mihir Shah, the main accused in the notorious Mumbai BMW hit-and-run case, confessed to driving the luxury car at the time of the deadly crash on the morning of July 7. The accident claimed the life of Kaveri Nakhwa, 45, and seriously injured her husband, Pradeep Nakhwa. Officials at the Worli Police Station confirmed Shah’s admission.
Mihir Shah was apprehended in Thane district on Tuesday, two days after the tragic incident where his BMW collided with a two-wheeler. Kaveri Nakhwa, riding pillion, died on the spot, while her husband was injured in the early Sunday morning crash.
Following his arrest in Virar, Shah was presented before a metropolitan magistrate court in Dadar, where he was remanded to police custody until July 16. His father, Rajesh Shah, a Shiv Sena politician from Palghar district, is also implicated in the case but is currently out on bail.
A police official informed PTI that Mihir Shah claims to possess a driving license, although the document is yet to be recovered by the authorities. Witnesses reported that after the collision, Shah continued to drive recklessly despite knowing that the victim was trapped under one of the car’s tires. Motorists tried to signal him to stop, but he ignored their pleas.
During interrogation, Shah admitted to being at the wheel but did not disclose when he started driving or the exact details of his journey. He confessed to abandoning the car at Kala Nagar and fleeing the scene, fearing public outrage. His family members also reportedly left their homes, fearing assault.
In court, the Mumbai Police argued for Shah’s custody, claiming he attempted to mislead them by altering his appearance, trimming his hair, and shaving his beard. They also seized the car’s number plate, which they suspect Shah and his family driver, Rajrishi Bidawat, attempted to destroy.
Additionally, the police raised concerns about Shah’s potential intoxication at the time of the crash, which he has evaded addressing. NDTV reported that Shah had multiple phone conversations with his girlfriend before abandoning the BMW, taking an auto-rickshaw, and heading to her house. The police may detain his girlfriend for questioning as part of their ongoing investigation.
