Dumka, Dec 3: Police have been clueless about the identity of the three motorcycle-borne miscreants who opened fire on a Santari deployed at the main gate of the Dumka central jail last evening.

The Santari namely Paltan Marandi had a narrow escape when the miscreants who were riding a motorcycle shot three fires targeting him and escaped without any resistance.

“At least three shots were fired by the miscreants targeting me while being on the Santari duty at the main gate of the central jail just before dusk but I could save myself by bending myself to dodge the bullets,” the Santari said adding that the miscreants managed to escape even before he could have raised the alarm.

Dumka DSP Noor Mustafa Ansari and the officer in charge of the Town Police Station Nawal Kishore Singh Singh rushed to the spot immediately and found that the CCTV camera installed at the main gate of the central jail was lying defunct for nearly a month.

“We attempted to get the video footage of the CCTV cameras installed at the roadside shops situating at some distance from the jail gate but in vain as the miscreants are not being identified,” Police Inspector Nawal Kishore Singh said adding that the investigation was on to identify and nab the assailants to ascertain the motive behind the attack on the Santari of the central jail.

The incident meanwhile has reflected the deteriorating situation of the law and order of the sub-capital town here besides putting a question mark on the security of Dumka central jail where dreaded criminals and Maoists are languishing.

“All the ninety CCTV cameras installed at the strategic locations of the central jail are lying defunct for the last one month” the superintendent of Dumka central jail Satyendra Choudhary said claiming to have apprised the higher-ups about the same.
