Ranchi, Sept 28: Several cases of animal-bites have been reported within past few days in Deoghar and surrounding districts of Santhal Pargana.

As per a data, at least 1201 patients have reported animal bites and received anti-rabies injections this year in Deoghar. Sources at the district health department claim that most of these cases are from Deoghar Sadar and Mohanpur block in the district.

Studies believe that the residents in the municipal corporation area are bitten by street dogs at night, whereas tourists are attacked by monkeys in Tapovan and Trikut of Mohanpur block.

Meanwhile, curative measures have been taken up by the Deoghar Municipal Corporation (DMC) a few months ago. The DMC had started a drive to sterilize the stray dogs to check their growing population along with vaccinating them.

More than five thousand cases of animal bites have been registered in all six districts of Santhal Pargana. According to data last year, Deoghar ranked top with 1451 cases alone, whereas Godda was placed second with 1376 cases.

Notably, at least 150 cases of animal bites are being registered every month in the Deoghar. Meanwhile, Dumka had 1165 cases, Sahebgunj had 841, Pakur had 736 and Jamtada registered 361 cases of dog bites.

Veterinary Dr Manish Shekhar suggests that patients of animal bites wash the wound with soap at least for 15 minutes and get vaccinated with the anti rabies injection within 24 hours of the incident. Pets should be vaccinated periodically too, he added.

Regional Director, DH, Dr B P Singh said that measures should be taken to check the population of dogs and the gap between tourists and monkeys at tourist spots or religious places should be widened with barricades or other arrangements.
