Islamabad, April 4: Pakistan Supreme Court has started hearings on National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaisar’s decision to reject Prime Minister Imran Khan’s no-confidence motion on ‘constitutional’ grounds.
The court had taken suo moto cognizance of President Arif Alvi’s dissolution of the National Assembly on Sunday. After arguments on the separation of powers between the judiciary and the legislature were advanced, Pakistan’s Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial stated that the court can interfere to some extent in the proceedings of the National Assembly. The Speaker’s decision to reject the no-confidence motion was not overturned by the court.
Notably, the no-confidence resolution against Prime Minister Imran Khan’s administration was dismissed by National Assembly Deputy Speaker Qasim Suri, who called it a violation of Article 5 of the Constitution.
Pakistan’s Supreme Court rejected that demand for a full court hearing saying, “If you have objections on any judge, tell the chair. Full court delayed many cases. If no trust then we too will leave.”
