Islamabad, August 29: Pakistan’s Islamabad High Court on Tuesday suspended Imran Khan’s conviction and prison sentence in connection with a case involving state gifts, and ordered the government to release him on bail.

Dawn News reported today that the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Chairman’s conviction and three-year prison sentence in the Toshakhana case have been suspended by the Islamabad High Court (IHC).

The much-anticipated ruling, which comes months before the nation’s elections, was made by the bench of Chief Justice Aamer Farooq and Justice Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri on the former Prime Minister’s appeal against his prison sentence.

The trial court in Islamabad found the PTI leader guilty of hiding information about state gifts in the case brought by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) and sentenced him to three years in prison, as per Dawn News. He was barred from running in general elections for five years as a result of the ruling.

Imran later filed an appeal against his conviction with the high court. He had also filed an appeal with the Supreme Court (SC) against the IHC’s decision to send the matter back to the judge on the trial court who had found him guilty.

Imran Khan was barred from politics for a period of five years and given a three-year prison sentence by the Pakistan District and Sessions Court on August 5 in the Toshakhana case, which involved the illicit sale of state gifts, according to local media. He was detained in the nation’s Punjab province’s Attock Jail.

Soon after being found guilty in the Toshakhana case, the PTI Chairman was taken into custody from his Zaman Park home in Lahore. Geo News reported that Imran Khan was also fined 100,000 Pakistani Rupees (PKR) by the court. According to Pakistan’s Geo News, Khan has expressed his displeasure at being imprisoned and claimed he doesn’t want to remain there.

Imran Khan, the chairman of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, has said, according to reports, that he is still confined to “distressing” conditions in his prison cell.
