New Delhi: A significant breakthrough emerged in Parliament as MPs from both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha agreed to hold a debate on the Constitution to commemorate the 75th anniversary of its adoption. The debates will take place on December 13 and 14 in the Lok Sabha, followed by December 16 and 17 in the Rajya Sabha.
The resolution to the parliamentary deadlock came after Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla chaired an all-party meeting earlier today, paving the way for smooth functioning of both Houses.
Scheduled Constitution Debates
Union Minister Kiren Rijiju confirmed the schedule and urged opposition leaders to maintain parliamentary decorum. “It is not good to disrupt parliamentary proceedings. We appeal to all opposition leaders to ensure that Parliament functions smoothly from tomorrow,” Rijiju said outside Parliament.
Key Issues to Be Highlighted
During the debates, the Trinamool Congress plans to focus on the atrocities against minorities, particularly Hindus, in Bangladesh, while the Samajwadi Party will raise concerns about the recent violence in Sambhal.
Sources indicated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi might participate in the debates. However, there is little likelihood of a specific discussion on the indictment of Adani Group chairperson Gautam Adani by US prosecutors over alleged bribery and fraud, according to PTI.
Opposition’s Stand
The Congress has consistently demanded discussions on the Adani Group indictment, alleging fraud and corruption linked to the industrialist. The grand old party has also criticised the government for avoiding debates on critical issues such as the Manipur unrest and Sambhal violence.
The Trinamool Congress, diverging from the Congress-led INDIA bloc’s strategy, intends to address broader concerns like unemployment, inflation, and fiscal discrimination against opposition-ruled states.
A Chaotic Past Week
Both Houses of Parliament witnessed repeated adjournments and protests last week. Opposition MPs accused the government of “running away” from addressing key issues. Lok Sabha proceedings were entirely disrupted, with similar protests spilling into this week.
