New Delhi: Congress leader Pawan Khera visited Sonam Wangchuk at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar on Friday, expressing concern over his health as he continues his hunger strike, now in its 20th day, demanding the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the paper leak issue, alongside the Cockroach Janta Party.

Khera Accuses Modi Government of Being Insensitive to Democratic Protest

After meeting Wangchuk, Pawan Khera said everyone was worried about his health, accusing the government in power of being insensitive and failing to understand the language of democratic protest, adding that in the face of such a government, methods of protest must continue to evolve.

Congress Expresses Concern for Wangchuk and Fellow Protesting Students

Khera said the party was concerned about the health of Wangchuk and the students protesting alongside him, cautioning that risking one’s life would not yield results from this government. Ahead of Khera’s visit, Congress had said it too wanted Dharmendra Pradhan to resign, taking a dig at the Modi government for consistently avoiding accountability, which it said had led to the collapse of the entire examination system.

Other Opposition Leaders Have Also Extended Support

Notably, leaders from AAP, Samajwadi Party and Shiv Sena have previously visited Jantar Mantar in support of Wangchuk. AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal visited the protest site the previous day, surprising many by suggesting that Wangchuk should be made the country’s education minister. SP MPs Dimple Yadav and Ruchi Veera have also visited the site to express their support. Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray posted on X saying it appeared the central government had decided to eliminate the right to protest in the country, adding that transparency should apply not just to NEET but to all examinations, and urged PM Modi to look into the matter.
