Washington: US President Donald Trump alleged on July 17 that China had stolen the data of 220 million American voters, addressing the nation on a range of issues including the economy, national security and elections.
Trump Claims Deep State Tried to Hide China-Linked Data Breach
Trump sparked controversy by claiming that certain officials and the “deep state” had attempted to conceal the matter linked to China and the alleged voting data theft, describing the breach as a major threat to America’s election security and stating that the current electoral system was neither fair nor secure.
Trump Accuses China of Wanting Him to Lose Next Election
Trump alleged that the Chinese government wanted him to lose the upcoming election, adding that his administration had long known that voting machines faced a significant risk of attack. He named Russia, China, Iran and North Korea as rivals of the United States that closely monitor the American electoral process.
Sensitive Voter Data Allegedly Stolen, DoJ Directed to Act
Trump said the stolen voter data included names, addresses, phone numbers, political party preferences and other sensitive information. According to reports, he has directed the Department of Justice, FBI and CIA to identify those allegedly responsible for concealing the information and pursue criminal charges against them.
Trump Alleges China Targeted Journalists for Negative Coverage
Trump further claimed that the Chinese government had identified American journalists who wrote negative reports about him and attempted to pay them large sums to produce more such negative articles. He added that he would brief governors, senators and members of Congress on ongoing issues in various states, stating that voting conditions in several states were currently very poor, and urged Americans to call their representatives in the House and Senate to demand swift passage of the “Save America Act.”
