Chennai: A viral video capturing an IndiGo flight struggling to land at Chennai Airport amidst Cyclone Fengal’s strong winds and torrential rain has sparked widespread attention. The dramatic footage shows the plane attempting to land but aborting touchdown at the last moment due to adverse weather conditions, only to circle back and land safely later.
IndiGo confirmed the incident involving flight 6E 683 from Mumbai to Chennai, explaining that the pilots performed a go-around—a standard safety maneuver—due to strong gusty winds and heavy rain, which eventually led to the closure of Chennai Airport.
“Due to adverse weather conditions, including rain and strong, gusty winds (which later led to the closure of Chennai airport), the cockpit crew executed a go-around in accordance with established safety protocols,” IndiGo stated.
Trained for Safety
The airline emphasized that the maneuver was executed as per safety norms and is part of standard pilot training.
“This is a standard and safe maneuver. Our pilots are extensively trained to handle such situations with the utmost professionalism,” IndiGo’s statement read.
The plane successfully landed at 12:40 pm, shortly before Chennai Airport suspended operations in anticipation of Cyclone Fengal’s landfall.
Cyclone Fengal’s Impact
Cyclone Fengal, which made landfall late Thursday night, caused heavy rainfall across northern Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, leaving parts of Chennai waterlogged. At least three fatalities have been reported in rain-related incidents in the city.
Authorities remain on high alert as the cyclone continues to impact coastal regions, with teams deployed for rescue and relief operations.
