Vatican City: Pope Francis, currently undergoing treatment for pneumonia at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital, expressed his heartfelt gratitude to doctors and healthcare workers for their care and support. The 88-year-old pontiff, who has been hospitalized since February 14, continues to show signs of improvement, though he missed delivering the Angelus prayer in person for the fourth consecutive Sunday.
Pope’s Message of Gratitude and Hope
In a written Angelus message on Sunday, Pope Francis acknowledged the compassionate service of medical professionals, calling their care a “miracle of tenderness.”
“I too experience the thoughtfulness of service and the tenderness of care, in particular from the doctors and healthcare workers, whom I thank from the bottom of my heart,” he said.
The pontiff emphasized the importance of empathy and kindness, stating that such tenderness brings light to the darkness of suffering.
Health Condition: Signs of Recovery But Caution Remains
While the Pope has reportedly avoided fever and respiratory crises in recent days, doctors remain cautious and want to monitor his progress further before making any long-term prognosis.
On Saturday, the Vatican confirmed a gradual improvement, stating that Francis was responding well to treatment. However, the Pope is still under close observation, and another medical update is expected on Monday afternoon.
Faithful Gather at St. Peter’s Square and Hospital
Despite his absence, thousands of Catholics gathered at St. Peter’s Square to pray for the Pope’s recovery. Many expressed their deep admiration and concern for his well-being.
“He is a wonderful person who has given so much, and I hope that he can return as soon as possible,” said Diana Desiderio, a volunteer from Pescara.
Similarly, Catholics gathered outside Gemelli Hospital, leaving flowers, candles, and prayers for the pontiff.
Pope’s Continued Call for Peace Amid Global Crises
In his message, Pope Francis also called for peace in conflict zones, including Ukraine, Palestine, Israel, Lebanon, Myanmar, Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Additionally, he expressed concern over renewed violence in Syria, urging for a peaceful resolution that respects all ethnic and religious communities.
A Reminder to Follow Medical Advice
A sign placed near the hospital window where the Pope is staying carried a simple yet profound message for the notoriously independent pontiff:
“Keep doing what the doctors and nurses tell you to do.”
As Pope Francis continues his recovery, the world watches with prayers and hope, awaiting his return to public addresses and Vatican duties.
