Gandhinagar: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the 20.8-kilometer-long Phase-II corridor of the Ahmedabad Metro rail project today from Sector 1 station. This significant expansion includes a 15.4-kilometer viaduct stretching from Motera to Sector 1, featuring stations at Gujarat National Law University (GNLU), Raysan, Randesan, Dholakuva Circle, Infocity, and Sector 1. Additionally, a 5.4-kilometer link line to GIFT City has been completed, adding two more stations at Pandit Deendayal Energy University (PDEU) and GIFT City. The entire project has been developed at a cost of ₹3,284 crore.
With this new corridor, the Metro rail corporation anticipates that the average daily ridership of the Ahmedabad Metro will surge to approximately 1.5 lakh passengers. The new line effectively connects Motera in Ahmedabad to Sector 1 in Gandhinagar, enhancing commuter convenience between the two cities.
According to Metro rail corporation sources, work on the Metro link between Sector 1 and Mahatma Mandir in Gandhinagar is progressing and is expected to be completed by September 2025. This extension will further bolster connectivity and is anticipated to increase ridership significantly upon completion.
Earlier this year, during the months of May and June, the Metro witnessed an average daily passenger count exceeding 1 lakh. Since its initial inauguration, a total of 5.18 crore passengers have utilized the Ahmedabad Metro services, generating a revenue of ₹63.54 crore for the corporation.
However, in Phase I of the project, construction work is still underway on two crucial stations. The Sabarmati station, which will connect the multi-modal hub and the Sabarmati broad gauge station, and the Thaltej Gam station, the final stop on the east-west corridor, are both nearing completion.
