Ranchi, May 25: The Ranchi University on Wednesday decided to change the dates of exams for the Post Graduate fourth semester students. The decision for this was taken at a meeting held between the department HODs and officials of the RU including Registrar and VC Dr Prof Kamini Kumar.
Notably, the mid-semester exams of fourth-semester students of PG were to begin on June 1, while the end semester exams were to be conducted from June 8.
However, after a two-day protest by the students and members of the ABVP Students’ Union, the university has now decided to conduct the practical exams and dissertation from June 14, while the exam for the theory paper is to begin on June 20, while it will end on June 24.
After the decision, Pratap Singh, Member, National Executive Council, ABVP said, “This is a win for the students along with the student union. Our demands were quite valid as well. As per UGC guidelines, a minimum of 48 classes should be conducted before exams are conducted. We may avoid this rule this time because of the pandemic, but it is the responsibility of the educators to make sure that at least the syllabus of the exams has been covered. This time, however, this was not the case. Students of all the PG departments had claimed that the syllabus had not yet been completed.”
He further added that in some departments, only a few chapters of the whole syllabi had been completed earlier. He also said that this is not the first time that something like this has happened. The last time that RU had taken exams without completing the syllabus, more than 90 students failed almost every semester.
When enquired about the extra classes being conducted in different departments including Yoga, Political Science, Public Administration, Commerce, and Economics among others, he said, “These extra classes being conducted are not only for PG but also for UG students. The university may decide for UG students as well, however, we have not been informed about it yet.”
Meanwhile, the acting exam controller, Dr Dhirendra Tripathi said, “The HODs of all the departments have been fully authorized by the university for conducting the practical exams. All the expenses will be taken care of by the university.”
Along with this, it was also decided that contractual teachers taking extra classes during the vacation will be paid by the university, added Dr Tripathi.
