Veteran cricket administrator Amitabh Choudhary passes away at 62

Ranchi, August 16: Veteran cricket administrator and ex-IPS Amitabh Choudhary (62) passed away on Tuesday morning at a city-based hospital in Ranchi. He also served as chairperson of the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC).

He was hospitalized here following a massive heart attack. Sources said that in the morning after bath and prayer he was walking on the lawn of his residence when he collapsed. He was rushed to the hospital where he was declared dead.

Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren expressed his condolences to the deceased’s family. He took to Twitter and said, “Received the sad news of the sudden demise of Shri Amitabh Choudhary, former Chairman of #JPSC.
Former IPS officer Amitabh Ji was also instrumental in increasing the game of cricket in the state. May God give peace to the departed soul and give strength to the bereaved family to bear the loss.”

पूर्व IPS अधिकारी अमिताभ जी ने राज्य में क्रिकेट के खेल को बढ़ाने में भी महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभाई थी।
परमात्मा दिवंगत आत्मा को शांति प्रदान कर शोक संतप्त परिवार को दुःख की घड़ी सहन करने की शक्ति दे।

A former IPS Amitabh Choudhary was a name to reckon with in the field of sports, especially cricket. He became a member of the Board of Cricket Control in India (BCCI) in 2002. In 2005, he defeated the then deputy chief minister Sudesh Mahto and became the president of the Jharkhand State Cricket Association.

He served as manager of the team India from 2005-09. He also served as acting secretary of the BCCI. He took voluntary retirement from the job in 2013 and joined politics. He unsuccessfully contested the parliamentary election from the Ranchi seat as the JVM candidate.

He was a native of Bihar and completed his engineering from IIT Kharagpur in 1985 and joined the Indian Police Service.
