Ranchi, Feb 17: The government-run Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) has a state-of-the-art Oncology department that now provides a full-fledged cancer centre with surgery, chemo and radiation therapy.
All facilities provided at Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai and Vellore Cancer Centre can now be availed by the treatment seekers at the 1,110-bed medical college in the state itself.
Head of the Oncology department at RIMS Dr Rohit Kumar Jha said that nearly 200 surgeries are being performed in a month to treat the cancer patients and 70-80 patients come daily to get suggestions.
“15-25 patients are provided with chemotherapy daily and 25-30 patients get the radiation therapy. All along we can cater to all types of cancer patients and patients get the same type of treatment as available in top-notch hospitals of the country,” Jha said.
On the question of whether the types of equipment available are up to date, he said, “The equipment available is fit for doing any kind of treatment but we do not have the luxury of robotic surgery which will be made available very soon.”
Two consecutive surgeries were conducted on 57-year-old Papun Majhiyan, a resident of East Singhbhum, and 42-year-old Virendra Prasad Singh, a resident of Bhagalpur, providing a fresh lease of life to both.
According to the doctors, Majhiyan had third stage stomach cancer which was treated by removing the stomach and creating a new stomach sac with the help of the intestine.
On the other hand, Singh had fourth stage oral cancer which was treated by removing the tumour from the area but the jaw was preserved in the surgery.
However, there are still a few important facilities such as Hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC), Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) and Robotic surgery along with other medical equipment like PET CT scan.
HIPEC is a cancer treatment that involves filling the abdominal cavity with chemotherapy drugs that have been heated. Also known as ‘hot chemotherapy,’ HIPEC is performed after the surgeon removes tumours or lesions from the abdominal area.
RFA is a minimally invasive technique that shrinks the size of tumours, nodules or other growths in the body. RFA is used to treat a range of conditions, including benign and malignant tumours, chronic venous insufficiency in the legs, as well as chronic back and neck pain.
Robotic surgery, or robot-assisted surgery, allows doctors to perform many types of complex procedures with more precision, flexibility and control than is possible with conventional techniques. Robotic surgery is usually associated with minimally invasive surgery — procedures performed through tiny incisions.
The Department of surgical oncology at RIMS started in June 2019 is a state of art Cancer Centre in the city of Ranchi. The unique quality of the Centre is its dedication to serving the socio-economically disadvantaged people who are unable to afford cancer treatment elsewhere due to various reasons.
Holistic surgical needs of all cancer patients are met with OPD, OT, ICU and Indoor services fully functional and catering to all patients from Jharkhand and nearby states
The cancer patients are given appropriate treatment facilities & proper oncological workup which include surgery along with pre-op, post-op care and optimisation.
The Surgical Oncology Department is a boon for the state of Jharkhand where earlier patients had to travel to other cities to avail proper treatment but now with the introduction of the surgical oncology department, the cancer patients can avail all the health care services and treatment in the city itself.
