Ranchi, Feb 22: Two open-heart surgeries were successfully conducted in a day since the commissioning of the operation theatre in 2018 in the Cardio-Thoracic Vascular Surgery (CTVS) department of RIMS.
This was the first time in the history of the RIMS that two open-heart surgeries were performed with the present infrastructure where there is a restriction of manpower and equipment.
36-year-old Prasad Sao, a resident of Patratu, and 58-year-old Bakridan Khatoon, a resident of Ranchi got a fresh lease of life due to the active approach of the CTVS department.
Dr. Vineet Mahajan, Head of the CTVS department said that it is time now when around 50 patients will be operated on in a month in the CTVS department which will not only benefit the people of the state but also the neighbouring states.
Giving the information about both the patients, Dr. Rakesh Kumar Choudhary said that Prasad Sao was diagnosed with cardiac heart disease a few months back and went to many private hospitals including CMC Vellore but the surgery could not be conducted due to financial issues as the surgery would have cost Rs 5 lakhs.
“Then he came to us and after investigation, we found that he needs an aortic valve replacement, so we did the surgery in just 2 hours and now the patient is out of danger and doing well,” Dr. Choudhary said.
“Just after the surgery of Sao, we took in Bakridan Khatoon after a gap of 30 minutes who was having many comorbidities including obesity and persisting hypertension. Though risk factors were associated with the case, we took the challenge and operated on her by changing her Mitral valve with a mechanical one in just 2 hours,” Dr. Choudhary added.
“Both the patients are fine now and we are closely monitoring both the patients. In a few days both the patients will be discharged,” Dr. Choudhary further said.
“With the existing infrastructure we have performed difficult surgeries which are only possible in the top-notch hospitals of the country but now it has become possible in the RIMS also. The time has come when no patients of Jharkhand will have to travel and go to any other hospitals for cardiothoracic surgery,” Dr. Choudhary added.
