Ranchi, Oct 11: Ranchi Municipal Corporation is continuously taking strict action regarding the collection of holding tax from the houses built in the city. However, still many houses in the corporation area have not been brought under the purview of holding. The corporation is going to conduct a drive against such people after Durga Puja so that the revenue of the corporation can be increased by allotting them holding numbers.

As per the 2011 census, there were 2.4 lakh houses in Ranchi city, which the corporation had allotted holding numbers. In the last 10 years, the corporation has allotted holding numbers to an additional 13,000 houses. That is, at present, a total of 2.17 lakh houses have been allotted holding numbers by the corporation.

An annual total demand of 55 crores has been made from the holding in the financial year 2021-22. So far 35 crores holding tax has been recovered. According to the revenue branch of the corporation, after adding the arrears of the previous year, a total holding of Rs 75 crore tax collection has been targeted in this financial year.

Since holding tax is self-assessed in which people have to measure their own homes and deposit tax in the corporation, many people have calculated the tax by hiding the area of their homes.

In this drive, the area of some houses will be investigated under randomization in every ward. This includes holding taxpayers and non-paying householders.

The advantage of this will be that people will have fear of the law and they will avoid evasion in tax assessment. A survey team has been prepared to conduct the drive. According to the information received, data is being prepared, under which the measurement of such houses will be done in the first phase.

As far as pending holding applications are concerned, then such a figure is between 2000 and 2500. Although it would be more appropriate to call it ‘running’ than calling it ‘pending’. Because this application is still under process. Apart from this, about 250 applications have been ‘sent back to citizens’. The reason for this is that if there is some mistake in the documents submitted by such people with the holding, then it can be rectified. It is necessary to rectify it for the allotment of the holding number.
