New Delhi, May 18: The Supreme Court on Wednesday removed the Praful Patel-led body that had been in charge of the All India Football Federation (AIFF), appointing a three-member administrative committee to govern Indian football.
The three-member Committee of Administrators (CoA) comprises of Justice Anil Dave, former Chief Election Commissioner of India SY Qureshi and ex-India captain Bhaskar Ganguly to oversee the business of the All India Football Federation (AIFF).
According to the Supreme Court, the current condition of circumstances is not conducive to efficient federation governance.
It ordered the CoA to immediately assume control of the AIFF and assist the court in facilitating the AIFF’s adoption of the constitution in accordance with the National Sports Code and model guidelines.
The COA will produce electoral rolls for the purpose of conducting elections to the AIFF executive committee, according to the constitution, which will be submitted by Qureshi and Ganguly’s two-member committee (ombudsman).
The Supreme Court reiterated that this is a pro-team arrangement to assist the staging of elections and taking over of the affairs to the democratically elected body as required by the constitution. It went on to say that the elections will be held as soon as possible.
On May 12, the Supreme Court consented to hear the Delhi Football Club’s complaint alleging the unconstitutional continuation of a committee and Praful Patel’s presidency of the AIFF for more than a decade.
