Dhanbad, March 3: A mega camp was held in the ENT department of Shahid Nirmal Mahto Medical College and Hospital (SNMMCH) Dhanbad today to honour World Hearing Day on March 3.
Over 250 patients from four districts, including Dhanbad, were screened and treated for deafness.
According to the organisers, this year’s World Hearing Day theme is “To Hear For Life, Listen With Care,” thus in addition to treatment, they concentrated on raising public awareness about ear care.
This was the first time that the ENT department of SNMMCH had organized a mega camp on the occasion of World Hearing Day in which patients including children, youth and old age persons of Bokaro, Jamtara, Giridiih and Dhanbad turned up for treatment and consultation.
“We also provided free medicines to the patients and the chart of precaution to follow for keeping ear care,” said Dr AK Tahkur, head of the ENT department.
Dr Thakur said that the aim of celebrating World Hearing Day is the continuous promotion of public health activities for the care of the ear.
“So, we would continue it and organize it in a remote area of the district, especially for poor people,” he said.
“Complications in pregnant women before delivery and jaundice to an infant are some of the reasons for deafness in children and we would alert the parents to take care in early stages of their child before the disease becomes complicated,” said doctors of the camp.
The camp was organized for five hours (9 a.m. to 2 p.m.) in a hall of the department but due to the massive turn up of patients from other districts, it was extended to 3.30 p.m.
Two other treatment rooms had to be created and 12 senior doctors including HOD Dr Thakur and interns were deployed to attend them.
The team of Dr D Chakrovarty, Dr Ashutosh Kumar, Dr Dheeraj Kumar, Dr Ak Chourasia, Dr Rajni Bala, Dr Anusha, Dr Komal Kumari attended the patients in the camp.
