New Delhi, Nov 23: Supreme Court on Tuesday refused to postpone Tripura municipal polls and suggested the state to consider deployment of additional forces.
The Supreme Court ordered the Tripura government to submit a statement of complaints lodged, FIRs registered, action taken and arrests made. The statement should be submitted along with the compliance affidavit.
A bench of Justices D Y Chandrachud and A S Bopanna said, “Postponing elections is a matter of last and extreme recourse. It is our view that short of postponing elections, the apprehension expressed by the TMC can be suitably addressed by issuing directions to the Tripura government to ensure that remaining phases of the municipal elections take place in a peaceful and orderly manner.”
The apex court had also warned Tripura government saying, if steps given aren’t implemented, court would be obliviated to take steps.
Notably, Supreme Court on Monday, agreed to hear a contempt plea of the All India Trinamool Congress (AITMC) today claiming that the law and order situation in Tripura is “worsening” by the day ahead of the civil body elections.
The local body election process commenced on October 22 after the notification and polling will take place on November 25. Polling for a municipal corporation, thirteen Municipal Councils and six Nagar Panchayats in the Tripura will be held on November 25.
