Agartala, August 16: A party leader said here on Wednesday that the BJP has chosen its candidates for the September 5 by-elections to the Dhanpur and Boxanagar assembly constituencies in Tripura’s Sepahijala district.

For the Dhanpur segment, the party nominated Bindu Debnath, while Taffajal Hussain was chosen for the Boxanagar assembly seat.

While Debnath serves as the party’s mandal president in Dhanpur, Hussain is a local leader in Boxanagar.

“Senior leaders are going to Boxanagar and Dhanpur to begin booth-level campaign from today. Our candidates will file nomination papers on Thursday,” Tripura BJP’s media in-charge Sunit Sarkar said.

The death of CPI(M) MLA Samsul Haque prompted the byelection for the Boxanagar constituency.

The resignation of Union Minister Pratima Bhoumik, as Dhanpur’s MLA made a by-election necessary for that seat.

Kaushik Chanda and Mijan Husain are the Left Front’s candidates for the Dhanpur and Boxanagar assembly constituencies, respectively.

The deadline for submitting nomination papers is August 17 and scrutinising will take place the following day.

The votes for the byelections will be counted on September 8.
