Pune, April 23: In the early hours of Sunday, a private passenger bus travelling to Mumbai was struck from behind by a truck on the Mumbai-Bangalore Highway at Jambhulwadi in Pune, resulting in at least four fatalities and 22 injuries.

According to officials of the Bharti Vidyapeeth police station, the truck’s suspected brake failure caused the collision, which happened at around 2 a.m. close to the Swaminarayan Temple in Narhe Ambegaon. Passengers were travelling by bus from Kolhapur to Mumbai’s Dombivli.

“Four people have been killed and 22 persons have sustained injuries. The injured are being treated at various hospitals. A probe is being conducted into the causes of the accident,” Inspector Vijay Kumbhar said.

Two males and two women were among the dead, according to the authorities. Three of the 22 injured were in the truck’s cabin, while 19 were bus passengers. The truck turned sideways after the collision.

The 18 people who were trapped within the bus’s severely damaged structure were extricated, according to Pune Fire Brigade control room employees.
