Uttarkashi, June 14: Section 144 has been implemented by the Uttarkashi district administration in Uttarakhand in Purola, which saw racial tensions amid an alleged attempt to kidnap a minor girl last month.

Additionally, the district administration has declined to give Purola permission to hold a maha panchayat.

Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code has been implemented at Purola, a hill station in the district, said Abhishek Rohilla Uttarkashi district Magistrate.

The authorities are to issue an order to forbid the assembly of four or more people in a location under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC).

No one will be permitted to disturb law and order in the state, Ashok Kumar, the DGP of Uttarakhand said on Wednesday.

“District Police and administration are fully prepared. We’re taking all the steps to maintain the law and order in the state, no one will be allowed to break the law…action will be taken against those who will try to break the law,” Kumar said.

The Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, Pushkar Singh Dhami, had promised that “cases of love jihad that are coming up will be strictly investigated” during a high-level meeting he had last week in the secretariat.

Officers from the Intelligence Department and Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) V Murugesan attended the meeting along with State DGP Ashok Kumar.

Tensions in the town of Uttarkashi had been caused by an alleged abduction attempt on a 14-year-old girl by two males, one of whom was from a minority community, last month. Both men were put under custody.

Strict action will be taken against those taking the law into their hands, Murugesan said on Monday.

“Recently there have been incidents of elopement in Uttarkashi, Vikas Nagar and other areas. Local people are agitating. FIRs were registered. Police are doing their duty to establish peace. Whoever breaks the law, strict legal actions will be taken against them. An investigation is underway,” he said.
