New Delhi: The Winter Session of Parliament begins today with three critical bills on the agenda. Coming in the aftermath of the NDA’s sweeping victories in Maharashtra and Haryana, the session sees the government entering with renewed confidence.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government has outlined a packed legislative schedule, including the much-discussed Waqf Amendment Bill and the Disaster Management (Amendment) Bill. The session, set to continue until December 20, is expected to be dominated by discussions around governance, public welfare, and reforms.
The Opposition INDIA alliance will hold a meeting this morning to strategize its approach. Congress leader Pramod Tiwari emphasized raising critical issues, including the ongoing Manipur crisis, unemployment, and rising pollution in northern India. Despite their plans, the Opposition finds itself on the back foot following electoral setbacks in Maharashtra and Haryana.
On Sunday, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh chaired an all-party meeting urging leaders to ensure smooth parliamentary proceedings. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju echoed the sentiment, seeking cooperation from all parties.
Speculations are rife that the government might introduce the ‘One Nation One Election’ bill, a concept recently highlighted by Prime Minister Modi. Alongside, amendments to the Banking Laws and Railway Act are slated for discussion, marking significant steps in financial and transport reforms. In the Rajya Sabha, the Bharatiya Vayuyan Vidheyak, 2024, focusing on aviation regulations, will also be tabled.
The BJP-led NDA is poised to capitalize on its recent electoral victories and project strong governance during the session. Meanwhile, the Opposition faces an uphill battle to challenge the government on pressing national issues effectively.
