Ranchi, Feb 4: On the occasion of World Cancer Day, 42-year-old Durga Manjhi, a resident of Tarwara in Godda district, got a new life by getting treated for the fourth stage of oral cancer at RIMS.
On being successfully operated, Manjhi said that he had been travelling from Godda to Kolkata for treatment amidst a money crunch and growing illness.
“I had lost the battle with life and my hope of getting better was coming to an end. But the doctors of RIMS saved my life and nothing can be a bigger gift for me on World Cancer Day than this. The use of tobacco proved fatal for me,” he said.
Durga Manjhi had oral cancer and it had reached the fourth Stage-A category. The problem persisted for the past year and a half. The expenditure of the treatment was in lakhs and the money crunch was coming to the fore.
After this, he reached RIMS with the hope of life. Here, the doctors of the ENT department treated him and now he is completely healthy.
On the other hand, Dr Zahid Mustafa Khan, Head Surgeon of ENT and Neck Cancer who treated Durga, said that Durga’s oral cancer was successfully operated on after the surgery which lasted for 4 to 5 hours.
“The cancer of the upper and lower parts of the jaw was cut and removed. After that, the chest meat was removed and reconstructed by doing plastic surgery. Durga was treated under the Ayushman Bharat scheme and for the same treatment in a private hospital, up to Rs 4 lakh would have been spent,” Khan said.
Durga Manjhi’s surgery was attended by HOD Dr Chandrakanti Birua, Dr Rajesh Choudhary, Dr Dashrath, Dr Anas, Dr Gajendra, Dr Ratna, Dr Shivani, Dr Komal, Dr Numan and Head Surgeon of Neck Cancer, Dr Zahid Mustafa Khan.
World Cancer Day is observed on 4th February every year to raise awareness about cancer and to encourage its prevention, detection and treatment.
